15:59 - 3.06.2026

June 3, Fineko/abc.az. The ceremony of laying the keel of the first of two container ships with capacity of 780 TEU intended for operation in the Caspian Sea was held at Baku Shipbuilding Plant LLC.

ABC.AZ informs that the project is being implemented within the strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UAE.

It is planned that the new vessels will be deployed on key routes, contributing to the strengthening of trade relations between the main regional centers and development of cooperation in the field of maritime transportation and logistics.

Each vessel is designed to ensure high efficiency in the transportation of container and general cargo. Its length will be 149.5 m, width - 21 m, loaded draft - 4.5 m, deadweight - 9,404 tons, and total cargo holds - 16,722 cu m.

Both container ships will be equipped with modern hybrid-electric power plants, which will increase the efficiency of maritime transportation and reduce the impact on the environment. The power plant will include equipment from Wärtsilä and Schottel, providing more economical fuel consumption, reduced emissions and improved maneuverability of ships.

The transfer of both vessels to the customer is scheduled until 2028. They are expected to play an important role in the development of the Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian International Transport Route) connecting Asia and Europe via the Caspian Sea, the South Caucasus and the Black Sea.

The expansion of transport capabilities on this route will help meet the growing demand for container transportation, shorten cargo delivery times and strengthen the position of the Middle Corridor as a safe, sustainable and competitive transport route alternative to traditional transportation routes.
