June 5, Fineko/abc.az. The Turkish Competition Authority (Rekabet Kurulu) has launched an official investigation into the economic entity of Meta (including Meta Platforms, Inc., Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, WhatsApp LLC, and Meta Platforms İstanbul Bilişim Hizmetleri Ltd Şti) over its artificial intelligence practices, while simultaneously imposing interim measures against the company.
ABC.AZ reports that this was stated in an official announcement by the regulatory body.
Key Issues Under Investigation:
Blocking Competitors: The probe examines whether Meta violated competition law by integrating its own "Meta AI" service into WhatsApp while restricting third-party AI providers from offering their services through the messaging platform.
Anti-Competitive Behavior: The preliminary investigation indicated that Meta's practices—specifically preventing third-party general-purpose generative AI chatbots and assistants from operating as primary services on WhatsApp—constitute significant evidence of market distortion.
Interim Injunction and Compliance Deadline: To prevent irreparable harm to the market before a final decision is reached, the Board ordered Meta to establish conditions that allow third-party generative AI bots to offer services via WhatsApp smoothly, without artificial technical or financial hurdles.
Meta must comply with these obligations within one month of receiving the reasoned decision. Failure to do so will result in administrative monetary fines.
