November 26, Fineko/abc.az. Railways play an important role in achieving economic development. By implementing new infrastructure projects, Azerbaijan contributes to the development of railways in the CIS region.

Minister of Digital Development & Transport Rashad Nabiyev made this statement, when delivering speech at the 83rd meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the CIS Member States.

He noted that among the works carried out by Azerbaijan on development of international transport corridor North-South , the cargo terminal under construction in Astara can be cited as an example.

"This cargo terminal will be completed and put into operation in 2026. The Zangezur Corridor is the main element of the international North-South transport corridor, and infrastructure projects are being implemented to launch this corridor.

It is planned to transport 15 million tons of cargo per year along this corridor. We are developing and strengthening common transport policy with partner countries and expanding cooperation. The development of the transport sector is important for Azerbaijan. By the end of this year, the renovation of the Sumgayit-Yalama line and reconstruction work on the Alat-Osmanli-Astara line will be completed. We also continue to cooperate with Iran on development of North-South Transport Corridor," the minister said, stressing that this project will give an impetus to development of the transport transit system of the countries of the region.

The minister added that the construction of the Astana terminal is nearing completion, and Iran will provide this terminal for use by Azerbaijan for 25 years.
