October 22, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan and Georgia, located on a strategic transport route – the Great Silk Road connecting East and West, have served as bridges between Europe and Asia for centuries, have made important contribution to development of trade and economic ties, strengthening cultural and humanitarian exchanges.

Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov made this statement during his speech at the V International Silk Road Forum.

He noted that Azerbaijan and Georgia, continuing this historic mission in a new context, play a leading role in strengthening regional cooperation, acting as key participants in formation of new transport and logistics routes in the Eurasian space.

"The friendly, strategic partnership relations that unite Azerbaijan and Georgia have been one of the most important pillars of stability and development in the region for many years. Today, our countries are reliable partners not only in political terms, but also in the economic, energy and transport spheres. The transport and transit sector traditionally occupies a special place on our agenda. This particular area has great potential in terms of increasing mutual trade and investment, as well as creating new economic opportunities. The strategic geographical location and large investments in transport infrastructure have strengthened Azerbaijan's position as an important transport and logistics center in Eurasia. Our country is constantly working to improve its transport infrastructure. Last year, the capacity of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway was increased from 1 million tons up to 5 million tons due to investments from Azerbaijan. At that, the second stage of expansion was launched in order to increase the annual capacity of the Baku International Sea Trade Port, located at the intersection of the country's main railways and highways, from 15 million up to 25 million tons. Azerbaijan has the largest merchant fleet in the Caspian Sea, as well as the largest cargo airline in the region," Asadov added.
