Metallurgical plant with prospect of switching to hydrogen fuel to be built in Azerbaijan

September 23 сентября, Fineko/abc.az. Kazakhstan's Fonte GreenMet Investments Fund and Azerbaijan's Dashkasan Iron Ore LLC have signed an agreement to build a hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant in Shamkir District with an annual production capacity of 2 million tons.

ABC.AZ informs that Dashkasan Iron Ore CEO Jeyhun Aliyev said about this on the second day of the First Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF 2025) in Baku.

According to Aliyev, the plant is scheduled to be operational by early 2029.

Aliyev stated that the facility will use the latest technologies to minimize environmental impact.

"The plant will operate using direct reduced iron (DRI) technology, which reduces carbon emissions by up to 60% compared to traditional blast furnace methods. Instead of coal, natural gas will be used initially, with the potential to transition to hydrogen in the future - enabling a shift toward zero carbon emissions," he said.
