May 8, Fineko/abc.az. In April, global food prices grew up to their highest level since February 2023, rising for the third month in a row. The main factor was a sharp rise in the price of vegetable oils due to geopolitical tensions, rising energy prices and increased demand for biofuels, which diverts agricultural raw materials from the food market.
ABC.AZ reports that the FAO price index increased by 1.6% in a month. Vegetable oils rose in price by almost 6%, meat reached a historic high due to shortage of livestock, and cereals increased moderately due to stocks.
The FAO warns of risks to future harvests: due to expensive fertilizers and economic pressures, farmers may reduce wheat crops and switch to less expensive crops.
