May 15, Fineko/abc.az. The growing demand for biofuels caused by the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz has forced the authorities of several countries to increase the permissible share of biofuels in diesel.
ABC.AZ informs that the closure of the Strait led to withdrawal of 14 million barrels of oil from the oil market. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has authorized the use of 5.4 billion gallons (20.44 million m3) of biodiesel and renewable diesel fuel in 2026 and 5.5 billion gallons (20.82 million m3) in 2027.
The quota has been increased from the level of 2025 by 61-64%, when biofuel consumption amounted to 3.35 billion gallons (12.68 million m3).
Brazil will increase the share of biofuels to 24% by 2035, which could increase demand for soybeans up to 74 million tons (from 7.2 million).
Indonesia has allowed biodiesel with 50% palm oil (previously 40%), with consumption growth of about 3 million tons a year.
Malaysia raised its share to 15%, adding 300,000-340,000 tons of demand annually.
