September 9, Fineko/abc.az. The role of the Middle Corridor in international freight transportation has been growing year by year. In 2024, 358 block trains were dispatched via the Middle Corridor from China to Europe, Fariz Aliyev, Head of the Transport Policy Department of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, said, ABC.AZ reports via AZERTAC.

According to him, thanks to infrastructure projects implemented in Azerbaijan, the volume of cargo transportation along the Middle Corridor increased almost fivefold compared to the previous year.

“The Zangezur Corridor has become a very important link in Azerbaijan’s transport system, acquiring strategic significance in establishing transport connections both in the East–West and North–South directions, as well as in carrying out transit freight operations. Construction work on Azerbaijan’s territory is planned to be completed next year. With the development of the Zangezur route, an additional 15 million tons of cargo will be transported via the Middle Corridor,” the department head added.

Aliyev noted that this year 450 block trains are expected to be dispatched to China through Azerbaijan: “In the medium term, this figure is expected to reach 1,000 block trains per year. We believe that through joint efforts, this number will increase further, and the Zangezur Corridor will play an important role in strengthening trade ties between China and Europe.”
