El Nino threatens crops and could cause grain prices to rise in 2026

June 18, Fineko/abc.az. The FAO economist warns that the powerful El Nino phenomenon in 2026 could seriously affect global agriculture, exacerbating problems with food, water and logistics.

ABC.AZ reports that droughts and heat waves are expected in Australia and South Asia, the weakening of the monsoon in India, floods in South America and East Africa, as well as disruptions in fishing. This can lead to crop failures, pollination disruption, and soil degradation.

Against this background, grain prices are already rising, and if the situation in key countries worsens, they may increase significantly in the 2nd half of 2026.
