Kazakhstan introduces a new gas-fired thermal power plant

April 14, Fineko/abc.az. A new gas-fired thermal power plant with capacity of 240 MW of electric and 277 Gcal/h of thermal energy has been commissioned in Kyzylorda in southern Kazakhstan.

ABC.AZ informs that two combined-cycle gas plants with capacity of 170 MW are already supplying electricity to the grid, and the commissioning of another combined-cycle gas plant with capacity of 70 MW will be completed in the near future.

The project implemented by Turkey's Aksa Energy is included in the plan of the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, according to which 2.64 GW of traditional generation and renewable energy capacity, including four combined-cycle gas plants, two wind and four solar power plants, should be commissioned in the republic this year. The new facilities will produce 16 billion kWh of electricity annually.

For comparison, electricity generation in Kazakhstan in the first quarter of 2026 reached 33.7 billion kWh, exceeding demand by 100 million kWh.
