Construction of a Road to Nakhchivan May Be Carried Out by U.S. Investors – President

August 27, Fineko/abc.az. “Now that President Trump has given his name to the Zangezur Corridor, I am confident it will be implemented in the near future. Regarding the construction of the physical infrastructure, I mean the railway, it should not take much time, since the route is only 42 kilometers long. If we were to build it, we could do it within a year, as we have more experience in railway construction. Armenia, however, may need several more years,” President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview with Al Arabiya, as reported by ABC.AZ.

According to the president, the construction could be carried out with the involvement of U.S. investors:

“In fact, for us it doesn’t matter. What matters is that the railway is built and that there are international security guarantees. In other words, Azerbaijanis traveling from Nakhchivan to the mainland or vice versa should not feel discomfort. They should not worry about their safety, given the long-standing confrontation and hostility. So, I think this project is now very close to being realized, and Armenia must now fulfill its part of the work.

As for us, I repeat, all the infrastructure to connect the two parts of Azerbaijan on our territory is already being created. But this is not only about connecting the two parts of Azerbaijan. It is about building a new transport route.”

According to him, today the Middle Corridor, or more precisely one of its branches, starts in Asia, passes through the Caspian Sea, via Azerbaijan to Georgia, and further into Turkey and Europe, as well as through Georgian seaports:

“This is the only way to connect Asia with Europe through Azerbaijan. Thus, the Zangezur Corridor, or TRIPP, will become an alternative. The second corridor will pass through the territory of Armenia. And this is beneficial for Armenia. I tried to convey this idea to my Armenian counterpart — that ultimately they will become a transit country. Every country with the necessary potential seeks to become a transit country. We, for example, also want to become a transit country. We want corridors to cross Azerbaijan from east to west, from north to south. Armenia, due to its occupation policy, was deprived of the opportunity of transit through its territory. Thus, thanks to the Zangezur Corridor, Armenia will receive transit fees from transportation. Considering that the volume of cargo from Asia to Europe through Azerbaijan is increasing year by year, I am confident that the Zangezur Corridor will become an important transport link connecting continents.”
